In July, the British government newly led by Andy Burnham approved proposals to build a data centre, office blocks and retail units around the site of the old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane – ignoring longstanding calls by locals and the Save Brick Lane Coalition to build social housing, in a borough with over 30,000 families awaiting housing from the council.
Join Majlis mag and Nijjor Manush for a collective mapping workshop diving into the politics of data centres and gentrification in the UK and South Asia. Using the case study of the Truman Brewery redevelopment, we will use mapping techniques to interrogate the right the city, and the politics of urban displacement in the age of AI.
We will ask: What is the impact of AI use on cityscapes globally?
How does it intersect with currents of gentrification and urban displacement?
Who bears the cost of the AI revolution, spatially?
And how can we resist this by building local community and coalitions?
