WEAVING SOLIDARITY – Rug-Making Workshop Series with a Political Edge

Trainings & Workshops

Our third rug-making workshop is coming in May!

It is wonderful to see so many people enjoying our workshops, and using the craft to create a non-judgemental circle where meaningful conversations flourish. Let’s gather again to explore ideas that connect us with people around us. Whether you’re a skilled craftsperson or trying a new craft for the first time, you’ll find a supportive space to create a unique rug from upcycled textiles.

Ukrainian artist Maryna Sulym will share her rug-making technique as a method of coping with traumatic events. She took up rug-making to process the news after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and hopes that sharing this craft and discussing our experiences will create a space for solidarity.

Ethiopian-British comedian, producer and cultural facilitator Selam Amare will lead a reflective and conversational session exploring humour, storytelling and community as tools for connection and resilience. Drawing from her work across comedy, live events and community-led programmes, Selam creates welcoming spaces where people can share lived experiences, sit with complexity, and find moments of release through laughter and honesty. She hopes this session will offer participants a chance to connect, reflect, and be in dialogue with one another.

Come to our session if you’d like to:

  • express solidarity
  • discuss coping methods
  • share your story
  • upcycle your clothes
  • learn traditional craft
  • create new connections
  • spend your time in a meaningful way

No prior experience necessary • All materials provided • Bring old clothes to recycle if you wish
