Join us for this first rug-making workshop, where you’ll learn a practical skill while engaging in meaningful conversation!
The Weaving Solidarity project includes Ukrainian traditional rug-making workshops led by artist and activist Maryna Sulym, using recycled clothing. Each workshop will be co-hosted by a guest from a different community affected by systemic oppression.
Through the act of weaving, we will learn the practical skills of rug-making while also engaging in deep, cross-community conversations. The workshops use the tactile, collective process of weaving as an entry point into political discussions—exploring shared struggles, lived experiences, cultural contexts and possibilities for solidarity as a form of organising into power.
In November session, Maryna will share her rug-making technique as a method of coping with traumatic events. She took up rug-making to process the news following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and hopes that sharing this craft and discussing our experiences will foster cross-cultural solidarity.
Queer Iraqi/Syrian/Assyrian performer and storyteller Yasmeen Audisho Ghrawi will facilitate a conversation around navigating the multitude of injustices in our world and invite participants to share the stories they are called to offer in our time together.
Come to our session if you’d like to:
- express solidarity and make new connections
- share your story and discuss coping methods
- upcycle your clothes while learning traditional craft
- spend your lunch hour in a meaningful way
No prior experience necessary • All materials provided • Bring old clothes to recycle if you wish
